The Schengen Visa is the result of an agreement made between 5 countries back in 1985 in a town not far from Schengen, Luxembourg, with the intention of progressively reducing border checks throughout the participating countries.

Fast forward to today and the Schengen Visa policy has since been enforced by the European Union; it’s active in 22 EU member countries and 4 non EU country members (the UK and Ireland have both opted out), and allows citizens of participating nations to move and reside in each other’s country without the need for a visa.
